Kindergarten Comprehensive Curriculum Overview

Reading

  • Develop comprehension skills in a literature rich environment, development of listening and phonics skills.

Spelling

  • Begin to use phonetic spelling, progressing to spelling with word families.

Language Arts

  • Complete writing assignments individually and in a group setting.
  • Incorporate basic punctuation in all writing.
  • Write daily in their personal journals.

Spanish

  • Identify vocabulary greetings & introduce cultural aspects including art, music & dance.

Math

  • Identify more, fewer, and same number.
  • Write numerals to 30.
  • Recognize patterns.
  • Count by 5’s and 10’s.
  • Add and subtract to 10.
  • Recognize basic coins.
  • Recognize basic shapes.

Science

  • Use basic science skills to explore materials, objects and living things.
  • Sort, classify, and report about information they have discovered.
  • Topics include: weather, plants, magnets, shadows, and recycling.

Social Studies

  • Discuss specific historical figures and national holidays.
  • Understand the concept of past and present.
  • Use position words in geography, recognize a globe and map and their features.
  • Understand needs and wants, and identify the traits of a good citizen.

Computer Technology

  • Understand and learn the concept that computers help people at school, play, and work.
  • Identify the CPU, keyboard, monitor, mouse, printer, disk drive.
  • Learn basic operations and procedures.

Art

  • Children will explore a variety of art processes: painting, drawing, sculpture, weaving, collage, etc.
  • We will also learn about primary and secondary colors and experiment with mixing paint.

Physical Education

  • Learn how to move using concepts of body and space awareness, effort, and relationships.
  • Demonstrate competence in a variety of manipulative locomotive and non-locomotive skills.
  • Learn the need for a personal fitness program.
  • Learn how and why to safely perform physical exercises.
