4th Grade Comprehensive Curriculum Overview

Reading

  • Apply word-analysis skills in reading, identify main idea and supporting details in a story, identify styles of poetry.
  • Continue to strengthen and increase vocabulary and reading skills through novel studies.

Spelling

  • Apply spelling skills to writing assignments and everyday work, apply vocabulary skills in written and oral communication.

Language Arts

  • Using the rules of grammar, identify the subject, predicate, and parts of speech.
  • Apply knowledge of parts of speech in creative writing.

Spanish

  • Engage in speaking, reading & writing consistently, combining three essential parts of the language.
  • Discover use of interrogative questions & yes & no questions.

Math

  • Multiplication by multi-digit numbers.
  • Division by single digit numbers.
  • Place value through millions.
  • Fractions (name, write, label, addition and subtraction).
  • Geometry (lines, line segments, rays, perimeter, area, volume).
  • Problem solving strategies.

Science

  • Study of Earth and solar system, water, weather, properties of matter, forms of energy, electricity and magnetism.

Social Studies

  • Study the state of Virginia.
  •  Learn about the Land and Regions of Virginia, American Indians and Europeans, Colonial Virginia and the Founding of a New Nation.
  • Study The Civil War and Reconstruction, and The Twentieth Century and Beyond.

Computer Technology

  • Use databases and spreadsheets.
  • Learn responsible and safe use of online resources.
  • Locate information on the Internet.
  • Explore e-mail and identify ways technology has changed.
  • Utilize advanced functions to assess and process information in the Microsoft Office Suite.

Art

  • We will explore four different styles of art and be able to compare and contrast them.
  • Observe and identify line, shape, color, value, space, texture and form and how these elements of design affect an art piece.

Physical Education

  • Learn to accept challenges that may result in either success or failure.
  • Use positive ways to resolve conflict and encourage others.
  • Continue to strengthen endurance and flexibility.
  • Understand that physical fitness is a key component to a healthy lifestyle.
  • They will be able to perform activities with other children with a positive attitude.
  • Demonstrate sportsmanship in all activities.
  • Continue throwing and kicking using dominant and non-dominant hand and foot.
  • Participate in relays, active games, parachute play games, races, and sports games.
