2nd Grade Comprehensive Curriculum Overview

Reading

  • Strengthen phonetic skills, implement reading strategies for further comprehension, build vocabulary, and relate literature to real life experiences.
  • Read in groups and independently.

Spelling

  • Learn consonant blends, vowel patterns, syllabication rules, and alphabetizing to the third letter.
  • Weekly spelling tests.

Language Arts

  • Learn types of sentences, sentence structure, parts of speech, and capitalization, and punctuation.
  • Learn to incorporate the concept of main idea and details in reading and writing assignments. Build cursive handwriting skills.
  • Develop and maintain a writing portfolio.
  • Learn to speak orally on a specific topic.

Spanish

  • Identify Spanish vocabulary in visual and tactile areas.
  • Discover new grammar aspects including singular, plural, masculine & feminine adjectives.

Math

  • Learn strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems up to three digits.
  • Introduce multiplication facts – 0-5.
  • Recognize place value to the thousands Utilize problem-solving strategies.
  • Tell time.
  • Use different forms of measurement.
  • Count money.

Science

  • Study the water cycle, weather and climate, the solar system, simple machines, force of movement, cause and effect, Earth’s changes, fossils and extinction, and identify properties of matter and energy.

Social Studies

  • Learn cardinal directions, map reading skills, state and national symbols.
  • Discuss and understand citizenship of our country, different community areas, consumers and producers, goods and services, trade and bartering, and spending and saving.
  • Study key events and important people from our nation ‘s past.

Computer Technology

  • Use and understand basic computer related terms.
  • Identify basic computer hardware components and peripheral devices.
  • Learn appropriate skills to print, save and format documents.
  • Identify the functions and advantages of computer software.
  • Show understanding of appropriate and acceptable online conduct.
  • Create and save a new document.
  • Open, view, format and print documents.

Art

  • Students will learn to recognize a variety of subjects found in famous artworks:
    • Landscapes
    • Still life
    • Portraits
    • Narrative
  • Students will create different examples of these using a variety of medium.

Physical Education

  • Demonstrate the ability to move using concepts of body and space awareness.
  • Learn to cooperate in whole group play using individual skills.
  • Practice necessary skills needed for physical fitness testing.

Sign Language

  • Students Learn to Sign the Alphabet as well as Common Phrases.
