3rd Grade Comprehensive Curriculum Overview

Reading

  • Read and demonstrate comprehension of fiction and nonfiction literature.
  • Demonstrate comprehension of information from a variety of print resources.
  • Focus on reading and writing skills through novel studies.

Spelling

  • Utilize knowledge of all vowel patterns.
  • Utilize knowledge of homophones. Decode regular multi-syllabic words.
  • Weekly spelling tests.

Language Arts

  • Apply understanding of the parts of speech through various writing activities.
  • Learn the skill of editing for correct grammar, capitalization, punctuation, and spelling in writing assignments.
  • Continue development of cursive handwriting.

Spanish

  • Learn & discover new vocabulary to include number, counting, objects & shapes.
  • Introduction to writing descriptive sentences.
  • Introduction of infinitive verb.

Math

  • Addition and subtractions through hundred thousands.
  • Multiplication and division through 9 facts.
  • Place value through the hundred thousands.
  • Multiply a single digit number by a multi-digit number.
  • Divide using remainders.
  • Fractions.
  • Understand and use customary units of measurement for length, liquid volume, and weight/mass.

Science

  • Introduction to the Scientific Method, Relationships of Plants and Animals, Earth’s Patterns, Cycles, and Changes, Force, Motion, and Energy, and Matter.

Social Studies

  • Study Greek and Roman Influence on Society, Famous Explorers, West African Empire of Mali, Economics, and Civics.

Computer Technology

  • Build skills in Microsoft Office Products to include extensive knowledge in WORD, power point and excel.
  • Modify prepared databases to enter/edit additional information.
  • Learn Copyright Laws and responsible use of resources and information technology.

Art

  • Students will learn to recognize at least three famous artists from history, their style and contribution to society.
  • They will apply the concept of styles by creating individual pieces in a variety of media such as watercolor on board, acrylic paint on canvas and three-dimensional pieces including masks and clay sculpture.

Physical Education

  • Demonstrate motor and non-motor movement as well as balance.
  • Learn to accept challenges and resolve conflicts. Identify basic human anatomy necessary for physical fitness.
  • Use dominant and non-dominant hand and foot to throw and kick.
  • Strengthen endurance and flexibility.
  • Learn to show sportsmanship in a variety of activities.
